The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma is haunted by untreated wounds suffered in a past trauma---the 1921 Tulsa race riot, war and massacre of African American men, women and children in the Greenwood business and residential community. The Tulsa Reparations Coalition* is appealing to individuals and organizations that believe in human rights and know that an injustice to one is an injustice to all. We are inviting you to do your part in securing justice for the victims and living survivors of the 1921 Tulsa devastation. The Coalition is issuing a Call for Endorsements of the five recommendations for reparations as stated by the "Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921":
1. Direct payment of reparations to survivors of the Tulsa Race Riot.
2. Direct payment of reparations to descendants of the survivors of the Tulsa Race Riot.
3. A scholarship fund available to students affected by the Tulsa Race Riot.
4. Establishment of an economic development enterprise zone in the historic area of the Greenwood District.
5. A memorial inclusive of the reburial of any human remains found in the search for unmarked graves of riot victims.
Please take just a few moments to respond to this call by first educating yourself about the Riot and the survivors (www.tulsareparations.org) and then by submitting your endorsement (www.tulsareparations.org/endorse.htm). Your small contribution of time today will mean the end of a lifelong nightmare to many Riot survivors and Greenwood residents and, hopefully, the beginning of healing for Tulsa, the State of Oklahoma and the nation.
Unfortunately more severe than the Oklahoma City bombing and its aftermath, the Tulsa disaster was the worst act of domestic terrorism in peacetime America --- a firestorm of hatred and violence.
The final report of the Commission was submitted to the Governor, the Oklahoma State Legislature, the Tulsa City Council and the Mayor of Tulsa on February 28, 2001 after 3 1/2 years of research---during which the Commission examined over 20,000 pages of documentation. The Commission concluded in their report that "There is no way but by government to represent the collective, and there is no way but by reparations to make real the responsibility . . . Reparations are the right thing to do."
We are confident that any caring and sensible human being who learns of and understands the ramifications of the Tulsa race riot, war and massacre of 1921 cannot and will not simply turn their backs on this massive violation of human rights. We are calling upon you to do your small part to finally make justice a reality in Tulsa.
Please visit the web site to read the Report (http://www.tulsareparations.org/TRR.htm) and survivor testimonials. Then access the Statement of Endorsement and submit your name, or the name of any organization that has made the decision to endorse the Commission’s recommendations (www.tulsareparations.org/endorse.htm).
Thank you for your support!
* The Tulsa Reparations Coalition was organized in April 2001 to achieve the five Commission recommendations. It is sponsored by The Center for Racial Justice, a 501(3)(C) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation that has worked in the Greenwood community of Tulsa since 1998.
